Voedselbos De Iest
FORESTS
FOR THE
FUTURE
Located in Sumar, Friesland, Voedselbos De Iest is a young food forest that is transitioning from a meadow to a foodforest.
Designed and developed by VæxTerra, this food forest supplies fresh, seasonal produce to local community and high-end restaurants while enhancing the local ecosystem. Every plant and tree is carefully selected to create a balanced, self-sustaining environment, enriching the soil and supporting local wildlife such as bees and butterflies.

Project Overview
Voedselbos De Iest is a multi-layered food forest that combines food production with a thriving ecosystem. This project includes fruit trees, nut trees, annual and perennial vegetables, and native plants that work together to create a biodiverse ecosystem.
Environmental Impact
The food forest improves local biodiversity, supports pollinators, and enhances soil health through natural processes. Voedselbos De Iest acts as a carbon sink, helping to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable land use.
Supplying Local Restaurants
Voedselbos De Iest partners with local chefs and fine-dining establishments, such as Mearkas. The system at voedselbos de Iest, provides Mearkas with unique and sustainably grown ingredients. This direct connection to the culinary sector allows us to promote seasonal eating and sustainability in the food industry.
